WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s sudden decision to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden appears to have won over even the most reluctant Republicans, and some GOP lawmakers are pushing for it to move quickly rather than drag into the 2024 election year.McCarthy opened and closed a private meeting Wednesday of House Republicans justifying his reasoning for the inquiry sought by former President Donald Trump, the party’s frontrunner to challenge Biden next year. The White House mobilized to fight allegations against the president regarding his son Hunter. In a 14-page memo to news media leaders, the White House urged them to accurately report on “the Republicans’ unprecedented, unfounded claims underlying an impeachment inquiry.”The moment is a politically pivotal one for the embattled Republican speaker McCarthy whose job is targeted Trump’s right-flank allies mounting a daily effort to oust him. ROME (AP) — A flotilla of flimsy boats, crowded with migrants and launched from Tunisia, overwhelmed a tiny southern Italian island on Wednesday, taxing the coast guard’s capability to intercept the smugglers’ vessels and testing Premier Giorgia Meloni’s pledge to thwart irregular migration.Compounding the political pressure on Italy’s first post-war far-right leader were vows by France and Germany to rebuff migrants who arrive by sea on Italian shores, and, in defiance of European Union asylum system rules, head northward to try to find jobs or relatives.Starting early Tuesday, the unseaworthy, overcrowded iron boats, came one after the other in what appeared to be almost a procession to onlookers on Lampedusa, a fishing and tourist island south of Sicily. Around 6,800 migrants came in a span of just over 24 hours — that number is a few hundred higher than the isle’s full-time population. In all, by Wednesday evening some 120 boats had arrived, Transpor...

DENVER (KDVR) -- Some members of Mayor Mike Johnston's transition team on transportation are proposing the city ban all right turns on red within his first 100 days."It's an easy policy change that can be done relatively quickly by the Mayor and city council," said Molly McKinley with Denver Streets Partnership.Right turns on red weren't legalized until the 1970s, according to Denver Streets Partnership, as a way to save gas during the oil prices, but research shows it hasn't made a huge impact. According to Denver Streets Partnership, allowing right turns on red increases pedestrian crashes by 60 percent and bike crashes by 100 percent."If you think about your experience as a driver if you're at a stop light and you're trying to make a right turn on red you're usually looking left you're looking for oncoming vehicle traffic, but drivers aren't always looking both ways in those occasions," McKinley said. EU politicians are acting as if they’re ready to move on from Qatargate.MEPs wrapped up a slate of transparency enhancements on Wednesday after Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the European Union speech earlier in the day made no reference to repeated breaches in trust that have plagued Brussels institutions. With a vote of 505 to 93, MEPs in Strasbourg approved changes to their own rules that would require them to declare their assets and log more of their meetings with interested representatives, including diplomats. They also agreed to implement a clearer definition of conflict of interest and publish considerably more detail about income from side jobs that pay more than €5,000. The broad majority was anything but assured: MEPs from the center-right European People’s Party and other more conservative groups rejected a version of the measure in a committee vote last week.“Proud that in record time, we took unprecedented decisions to strengthen integrity,...
